As a mom, wife, and follower of Christ, I’ve come to realize how important family traditions are in knitting our hearts together and pointing us toward God. These special rituals, big or small, become the threads that weave our family story.
When I think about our family traditions, I’m reminded of Deuteronomy 6:6-7: “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.”
This verse reminds me that our traditions can be a beautiful way to impress God’s love on our children’s hearts. Here are some simple ideas to incorporate traditions into your family life:
- Sunday Family Devotions: After church, gather around the kitchen table or wherever you are eating, with your Bibles and discuss the sermon, relating it to your daily lives.
- Thankful Jar: Keep a jar in the kitchen and drop notes about things you’re grateful for. On Thanksgiving, read them aloud, celebrating God’s blessings.
- Birthday Prayer Circle: On each family member’s birthday, form a circle and take turns praying blessings over them.
- Christmas Eve Candlelight Reading: Dim the lights and read the nativity story by candlelight, reminding us of the true meaning of Christmas. One of my favorite memories from my childhood was my Grandpa reading Luke 2 at Christmas.
- Family Game Night: Pick a night, put away your devices, and enjoy board games together, fostering connection and laughter.
Remember, traditions don’t have to be elaborate or perfect. The key is consistency and heart. They’re about creating moments that point to God’s love and strengthen our family bonds.
What traditions do you have in your family? I’d love to hear how you’re weaving faith and love into your everyday life!
