A Reflective Christmas Eve: Cherishing the Present, Honoring the Past

As I sit here on Christmas Eve (Eve), wrapping gifts under our beautifully adorned tree, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions washing over me. The scent of freshly baked, not homemade, cookies fills the air, reminding me of the love and effort we’ve poured into making this holiday special for our little family.

This year, Christmas seemed to sneak up on us, yet here we are, ready to embrace the joy and wonder of the season. Our tree may not be overflowing with presents, but each gift beneath its branches represents thoughtfulness, love, and the fruits of our hard work. It’s a humble reminder that the true essence of Christmas lies not in abundance, but in the heart behind each gesture.

As parents, my husband and I find solace in focusing on our children and the true meaning of Christmas. We’re excited to share with them the importance of giving and the ultimate gift of Jesus Christ. It’s a beautiful opportunity to instill in them that memories and family time far outweigh material possessions. (Though I must admit, I’m sure their grandparents and extended family will ensure they’re adequately spoiled!)

I won’t deny that this season has been emotionally challenging. The weight of past Christmases lingers in my heart – the joyous chaos of cousins playing, the traditional Christmas Eve Mexican feast at one set of grandparents, and the excitement of opening stockings with all my cousins at the other. These memories are precious, made even more poignant by the absence of loved ones. This year marks our first Christmas without my beloved Grandma Pat, and only Grandpa Dave remains from that generation.

Yet, amidst the nostalgia and hints of sadness, I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude. I’m thankful for our real Christmas tree, a small luxury that brings so much joy. I’m grateful for the gifts we carefully chose for our children, anticipating their bright-eyed wonder come morning. Most of all, I’m blessed beyond measure with our family of four here on earth, while also holding space in my heart for our blessings in heaven.

As we stand on the cusp of creating new traditions and memories with our children, I’m reminded that the spirit of Christmas endures. It adapts and evolves, just as our family has. While we may miss the large family gatherings of the past, there’s a special intimacy in our small family celebration that I’ve come to cherish.

This Christmas, as we honor the memories of those who are no longer with us, we also celebrate the present and look forward to the future. We’re ready to fill our home with laughter, love, and new traditions that our children will one day look back on with the same fondness I feel for my childhood Christmases.

In this season of reflection and anticipation, may we all find moments of peace, joy, and gratitude. Merry Christmas to all, and may the true spirit of the season fill your hearts and homes.
