As a mom passionate about holistic health and clean beauty, I’ve learned that what we put on our skin is just as important as what we put in our bodies. Today, I want to share some eye-opening information about ingredients commonly found in skincare, makeup, household, and bath products that we should all be wary of. Let’s dive into the world of clean beauty and discover why these ingredients might be doing more harm than good.
1. Artificial Preservatives and Fragrances
Artificial preservatives and fragrances are often added to products to extend shelf life and create appealing scents. However, these synthetic ingredients can irritate sensitive skin and potentially disrupt our hormonal balance. Many artificial fragrances contain phthalates, which brings us to our next concern.
2. Phthalates and Parabens
Phthalates and parabens are two groups of chemicals frequently used in personal care products. Phthalates are often found in fragrances and can affect reproductive health, while parabens are preservatives that have been linked to hormone disruption. It’s best to look for products that explicitly state they are phthalate-free and paraben-free.
3. Sulfates and Irritants
Sulfates, like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), are foaming agents that can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Other common irritants include certain alcohols and harsh exfoliants. If you have sensitive skin like me, it’s crucial to avoid these ingredients to maintain a healthy skin barrier.
4. Aluminum and Talc
Aluminum, often found in antiperspirants, has been a subject of concern due to its potential link to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Talc, a mineral used in many powders and makeup products, has been associated with respiratory issues and, in some cases, contamination with asbestos. Opt for natural deodorants and talc-free makeup alternatives.
5. Formaldehyde Releasers
Some preservatives slowly release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. These ingredients might be listed as DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, or quaternium-15. Always check the ingredient list and avoid products containing these formaldehyde-releasing compounds.
6. Gluten and GMOs
For those with gluten sensitivities, it’s important to note that some beauty products contain gluten-derived ingredients. Similarly, GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) are present in many personal care items. While the effects of topical application are still being studied, many prefer to avoid these ingredients altogether.
7. Propylene Glycol and Alcohol
Propylene glycol is a common moisturizing agent that can cause skin irritation in some people. Certain types of alcohol in skincare products can be drying and irritating, especially for those with sensitive skin. Look for products that use gentler, plant-based moisturizers instead.
8. Synthetic Color Dyes and Titanium Dioxide
Synthetic color dyes, often listed as FD&C or D&C followed by a color and number, can be irritating to the skin and may even be carcinogenic. Titanium dioxide, while natural, has raised concerns when used in powder form due to potential inhalation risks. Opt for naturally pigmented products when possible.
9. “Other Ingredients” and Companies that don’t show their Ingredients
“Other ingredients” can be just as bad. What are they? Why isn’t the company listing them? A few other ingredients to look out for and be cautious of: sucralose, 1,4-dioxane, PEG – polyethylene glycol, and chlorine bleach
As we become more aware of these potentially harmful ingredients, it’s empowering to make informed choices about the products we use on ourselves and our families. Remember, transitioning to clean beauty and non toxix cleaning doesn’t have to happen overnight. Start by replacing one product at a time with a cleaner alternative.
I encourage you to read labels, research ingredients, and choose products that align with your health goals. Your skin – and your overall well-being – will thank you for it!
